When shopping electronics in our day and age, with our global economy, it’s super important that you can actually trust the companies involved. No matter if they reside in the US, Norway, France or in the far east – trust is a bond that is the basis of commerce.

One of the most read articles on this blog, and that should say something considering I have been blogging on a weekly basis for years now – is my post about the Assassins Creed hoodie scam. If you read the comments you will notice how many have fallen for this scam and that they keep changing name whenever they get too much heat. Thankfully my blog has pretty good coverage, so I have helped save a lot of people out of getting ripped off — which I consider my duty regardless of where you live.

I therefore feel its my duty to warn you about these online vendors as well, namely: Geek, Wish and Banggood. Because having used their services for the past year, they represent probably the worst experiences I have ever had when ordering goods abroad.

Geek and Wish

These two are actually one and the same. It doesn’t matter if you download the Wish app or the Geek app — it’s the same asian online mall, and where you get the impression that you are ordering from a single store (or at least someone who ensures a reasonable degree of responsibility), its actually hundreds of individual stores all cooked together into a single, massive catalog.

In short, asian retailers can register and get their goods included in the single webshop, but they can reside in completely different regions (even nations).

And the rating system that is supposed to protect you is a complete scam as well. I spent the better part of an afternoon looking up electronics, and I found the same comments with different names on completely different products. In some cases they havent even bothered to clean up the text, but had a review for bath-robes on super-nintendo compatible handheld consoles, bicycle lights on green laser products (and so on). So you essentially had a few hundred comments that were utterly fake, rotated and adapted to different products. Some comments were real ofcourse, but you dont exactly trust a store that you know includes fake feedback comments and ratings.

Sadly I noticed this after I had aleady ordered and paid.

As for getting what you actually ordered, well – I am still waiting for my two touch screens to use with my Raspberry PI. It’s now been almost two months since I first ordered, and my email’s to the shop is not even replied to. And the tracking ID for the packages I got in my order-confirmation email are invalid (I tried to use them and they dont work) — so this was me throwing money out the window.

When it comes to what you order and what you get, that is rarely the case. I ordered 2 handheld consoles which was advertised as being SNES and Mame compatible. Quad Core CPU, 1 gigabyte of ram and support for normal TF cards. What I got was a useless handheld that just barely supported Gameboy roms – and it struggled to even start them (!) The menu system was sluggish. So sluggish it was almost impossible to navigate the games that were built into the device. When trying to return this and launch a complaint, the store-salesman replied in chinese to everything. On purpuse, because when I first contacted them they replied in english. It was only when I brought up the complaint that they switched to chinese to brush me off. Basically he just did not care that what I received was not what I ordered. And he made no effort to clean up his mess. In other words: a scam.

When I contacted wish, that has a european contact number – rather than being helpful they just argued against what I had to say. It is by far the worst experience I have ever had with regards to online ordering.


This is another, similar concept as wish and geek. The sneaky part is that they have translated webpages that gives the impression that you are ordering from a local branch -or at least within the EU. But on closer examination it is yet another asian mall front. Stores can register and there is no system in place to kick stores out based on feedback – or give them negative feedback that actually sticks.

Here I paid with my credit card, yet they managed to send me a bill via a Norwegian invoice company. And just like wish and geek – they have no interest in your case, they just want to get rid of you.

Stay away

I don’t base my warning on a single case. In all cases I have ordered multiple products, and I have also given each system a second chance. In which they all failed and was useless to me as a customer. As for customer service they exclusively took the store’s side (which is absurd when you have ordered a quad-core cpu based product, and you get something running of a cpu that couldn’t even control a dish-washer).

So you should stay away from these, because you will be ripped off one way or another.

Use AliExpress instead

The only asian store-front I have good experiences with is AliExpress. They have a real comment system in place, and they also have a working feedback system. If a store get’s to many negative responses they are actually kicked out. As such the emphasis is on positive feedback and being honest. A negative score is enough to lose hundreds of sales so naturally they work very hard to make sure things work.

When ordering via AliExpress I have never once gotten something else, I have always gotten exactly what I ordered – and there is also a refund system that will refund you should a store try to cheat you. In fact, money is held in escrow until the package has been tracked to your address and is marked as delivered.

You then have 14 days to demand a refund, in which you have to send the package back and give AliExpress the new tracking number. Once the package has been verified as delivered, you get your money back.

For components I suggest RC electronics. I just dont order that much from china any more because (and I am sad to say this) they have to many scams and you cant trust them. But when I order from asia, its via AliExpress. I have yet to have a bad experience there.

    How did you pay for the goods? Do you have any recourse via the payment mechanism?

      Not so far. You dont get far when even the local representation just dont give a damn. So ill stick to AliExpress from now on

    I would note that Geek/Wish has gotten better over the past year. I’ve had 2 problems out of near a hundred items ordered this year. Both were refunded very rapidly by Wish customer service. Shipping takes 3 weeks, and the quality of shipping protection leaves something to be desired… but it’s incredibly inexpensive. It’s rare that I pay over $10 for an item including shipping, and common to pay half that.

      My experience exactly. I never buy truly expensive products through Wish, but I stock up on all sorts of cheap crap–socks & the like–and I have had nearly 100% positive experiences.

    I have order watch from geek .since july 2016 up till today.they don’t deliver my goods.

    I use geek from time to time and usually do pretty good with them until here recently.i noticed they had cell phones for free just pay shipping, they do that on quite a bit of stuff to get people to buy the item them snag them when they pay for the shipping. Only on the phones the shipping is only around 2 dollars usually. I tried it out and then noticed after a week or so that the add that was in my ordered file had changed from the phone to a phone charger cord. I found another add for a free phone and took several screenshots of the add and then ordered the phone. I waited and again about a week later the add again had changed and it wasn’t like a big difference it was still the same add but at the bottom of the description it has the words cable added onto it.
    I have ordered with geek for some time now and have had several problems not receiving what I ordered but if you catch it at the time right before the deadline and contact support they will refund your money so all I’m going to do on this is I’m not going to ask for a refund because who wants to go to the trouble of boxing up a cord and sending it back for a dollar or two but if you just tell them you never received your item and want your money back they will refund your money right away. I’ve had them ask me to give it another ten days before if I ask for a refund to early but they have always refunded my money when I didn’t receive anything. Now I will be receiving something in this case but it isn’t what I ordered I don’t care if it says that on the add now I have a screenshot of the add that I ordered it from. I will let you know how it goes when I receive my power cable lol phone lol.

    I’ve ordered from Wish/Geek 17 times in the last 3 years. I’ve had trouble twice, both times it was resolved quickly and satisfactorily. The first time I ordered an android TV box and received a stick instead (like the Fire Stick). I used the app to contact customer service, I was issued a complete refund and was told I could keep the stick instead of sending it back. The second time I did not receive a pair of gloves I ordered and was issued a refund after 2 weeks. I feel one must take care when shopping the Chinese mall sites such as Ali and Geek/Wish, but I wouldn’t say they are a scam. Some of the individual stores seem to price some of their items high (just like Walmart and other US stores, it’s a common way to play the odds), just do comparisons before you buy. Sorry you had such a bad experience, but I don’t believe it is the norm.

    After reading this article I installed AliExpress. For some of the items I searched for there were the exact same items that I saw on Wish, even using the same photos, only they were more expensive on AliExpress.

    I already ordered several inexpensive products from Wish prior to reading your article. But I only ordered them last week so haven’t had time for them to be delivered yet. I guess I’ll hold off ordering anything else until I see if the stuff I already ordered arrives or not, and if the products are satisfactory.

    Good, informative article!
    We deleted all our accounts from wish and banggood earlier this year.

    I must add that paying by PayPal is of no help.
    PayPal will not refund anything as long as the seller has shipped an item, even if I proved that the item was completely different (in my case a metal laser sword, which was a simple 1 $ plastic toy upon arrival).

    PayPal demands that the return of goods is through registered mail. Try sending a registered package to China for less than 40 USD from Norway!
    When challenged with that fact, one employee of PayPal accepted another method, upon after sending the package, another one refused to acknowledge the previous mail.

    The case went so far that I got a mail from the Norwegian sales representative of PayPal where he literally said that PayPal will cancel all further correspondence with me.

    I must add that my correspondence allways(!) was polite, referring to their own correspondence, but they choose to ignore you until you give up!

    I have deleted my PayPal account after almost 20 years of use, and will go so far to call them a scam too!

    I’ve used Paypal for paying always and I’ve bought a lot stuff from geek (geek.wish.com). Just one of my purchases didn’t correspond to what I’ve ordered (I got a refund and was told to keep the other item). My problem is the mail, I live in Mexico City where mail is slow but mostly reliable; yet my place is an apartment so my stuff used to get “lost” because the postman left it in the shared mailbox, he claimed that it was an ordinary shipment so he held no further responsibility beyond leaving it a the mailbox. Nevertheless, I have never lost a penny because of that, as I’ve asked for a refund for every not received product. The refunds were applied every time. There was a time that the product arrived two weeks later, but the automated refund procedure told me that if I eventually received my order I could keep it.

    I’ve ordered several things from Wish and a handful of things from Geek I’m waiting on the things from Geek they should be arriving in a few days. I have not had any problems from Wish my only complaint with them would be the customer service chat bot, does not give you many options to choose from as far as issues go. There has been a couple instances where I asked for a refund but Refunds were issued very quickly and without any problems. And as for geek shipping is usually cheaper than Wish for me in the items say they will arrive faster than wish. I have been good I just downloaded it a few weeks ago I haven’t ordered anything from them yet but I would expect the same results I’ve gotten from wish. And ask for this Ali express, this is a website that I do not trust if it is the one I’m thinking of. I’m constantly searching things on the Internet and examining different prices from different sites. And this Ally express site constantly is 70 8090% cheaper. I’m talking about a Dewalt two toolkit combo that’s $150-$200 is like 50$ or something just absurd on the site I’m thinking of which I do believe is this aliexpress. I just checked and not verify that I’m correct. But I can say it dam sure looks like banggood. But a little research says it’s owned by alibaba and is not the same as wish and geek. Time will time.

    I have never had a problem ordering from Banggood. Had an issue once, with a delivery that never arrived. I contacted them, they were helpful and problem was sorted. As for Wish, just be careful what you order. Some things are serious rubbish. I have ordered from Wish for some years now and basically know what to avoid.
